A blue variety of anhydrite, it is a calcium sulfate mineral that can turn into gypsum if exposed to excessive water.

Scientific Classification: A fine-grained, blue trade variety of Anhydrite (calcium sulphate evaporite mineral).
Composition: Calcium Sulfate.
Physical Properties: Ranks between 3.0 and 3.5 on the Mohs scale. It forms in the orthorhombic crystal system. Crucially, it is highly soluble and will transform into gypsum if submerged in water.
Visual Characteristics: Always pale blue or grayish-blue, typically translucent to opaque with a soft, subdued luster.
Origin & Localities: Forms through the gradual evaporation of ancient seas and saline lakes. The primary commercial source is Peru.

Etymology: "Angelite" is a modern trade name given to this blue Anhydrite due to its heavenly color. The parent mineral, Anhydrite, derives its name from the Greek anhydros, meaning "without water".
Ancient Uses: Because this specific nodular formation is a relatively modern commercial discovery, it does not share the ancient carving history of other common silicates.
Historical Discoveries: It was first brought to wider esoteric attention following its commercial discovery in Peru during the 1980s.
