BLACK OBSIDIAN

A naturally occurring volcanic glass formed when lava extruded from a volcano cools rapidly with minimal crystal growth.

Scientific Classification: An extrusive igneous rock (volcanic glass). It is technically a "mineraloid," not a true mineral, because it lacks a crystalline structure.
Composition: Primarily Silicon Dioxide, usually composing 70% or more of the stone, alongside varying earthy impurities.
Physical Properties: Ranks at 5 to 5.5 on the Mohs scale. It exhibits classic conchoidal fracture, breaking into incredibly sharp, curved edges.
Visual Characteristics: Deep, opaque black with a high vitreous (glassy) luster.

Etymology: Named after Obsius, an ancient Roman explorer who was believed to have first discovered a similar stone in Ethiopia, according to Pliny the Elder.
Ancient Uses: Because it can be fractured to produce blades sharper than modern steel scalpels, it was used extensively by ancient cultures globally for arrowheads, spear points, and cutting tools.
